The Golden Ratio in Interiors

Published by on

Are you familar with the golden ratio and it's appeal to us humans?

You may already be familiar with the Golden Ratio, a phenomenon which appears in many aspects of life including nature, geometry, architecture and art.

The Golden Ratio itself is a formula that exists when a line is divided into two parts and the longer part (a) divided by the smaller part (b) is equal to the sum of (a) + (b) divided by (a), which both equal 1.618.

But what’s the relevance of all this? Well it's been found that us humans are naturally attracted to things which demonstrate the Golden Ratio, so why not consider carrying it over to the interiors of your home?

By utilising the Golden Ratio of 1:1.618 when choosing your furniture and décor, you could end up with a home that is subconsciously more pleasing to the eye. When choosing colours, research has found that those separated by a ratio of 1:1.618 on the light spectrum are often found to be aesthetically pleasing together. As for furniture, try dividing your room into thirds for an easy way to utilise the Golden Ratio – in 2 thirds of the room, place larger furniture like sofas and in the last third, place things like individual seats.

You don’t need to go as far as measuring out every inch of your property and furniture but a little consideration of the Golden Ratio when doing up your decor could make your home feel a little more “right”.
